Policy and Resources

The Indian River School District is committed to protecting the health, safety, and welfare of its students and school community. This policy supports federal, state, and local efforts to provide education on youth suicide awareness prevention; establish methods of prevention, intervention, response to suicide or suicide attempt, and reporting procedures. In accordance with 14 DEL §4124, the Indian River School District will adhere to procedures set forth in the administrative regulation JG.4. 

District School and Mental Health Counselors diligently work to safeguard the social, emotional and behavioral wellbeing of all students to enhance mental health awareness, decrease the stigma, develop response protocol for suicidal ideation and threat of harm, and develop resources to help students and/or families navigate where to get help.

Suicide Awareness and Prevention Resources

Indian River School District recognizes the importance of providing relevant, equitable, and evidence-based resources to support social-emotional development in our district’s youth.  The following have been organized to support students and their families navigation of resources to enhance suicide awareness and prevention:

Intervention Components

Indian River School District commits to…

  • Informing parents/guardians when a student poses a risk of harm to self or others. 
  • Use of an evidence-based screening tool to determine the risk of harm or suicide risk.
  • Maintain student safety while in our care.
  • Requiring the release of students to parents/guardians, irrespective of the determined risk level, as it is important to ensure careful consideration of safety protocols, while maintaining a responsible approach to ensuring the welfare of all students involved.
  • Referring the student to the emergency response provider (MRSS: Mobile Response Stabilization Services), based upon the determination of the level of risk &/or the need.
  • Supporting the parent/guardian through their student’s mental health crisis.
  • Stressing the importance the student will be sent home with the parent/guardian.
  • Provide culturally responsive mental health resources and recommendations of next steps to families.
  • Refer students and their families to emergency response personnel based on student need.
  • Coordinate follow-up communication with community-based mental health providers.
  • Develop a plan for follow-up to support student need. 
  • Deliver evidence-based Mental Health/Social Emotional Learning curriculum to enhance student awareness of the Mental Health Competencies:
    • Recognize mental health as brain health, an integral component of overall health
    • Promote social and emotional competence as a protective factor
    • Enhance awareness about mental health challenges
    • Increase help-seeking behavior
    • Decrease Stigma
