2025-2026 School Year

The gymnasium at Georgetown Elementary School was transformed into an art studio in February as students worked with local artist John Donato on a special art mural project as part of the SEL and PBIS programs. Students painted 39 separate panels that will eventually be displayed throughout the school.

In February, the Freeman Arts Pavilion brought zydeco musician Terrance Simien and his "Creole for Kidz & History of Zydeco" program to schools in the Indian River School District. Here are highlights from Mr. Simien's performances at Lord Baltimore and Georgetown elementary schools.

Sussex Central High School Principal Dr. David Carter pays tribute to senior Osiah Kelley, who received the African-American Achievement Award from the Southern Delaware Alliance for Racial Justice on February 9.

IRSD paraprofessionals participated in full-day professional learning activities on January 30 at Millsboro Middle School.

On January 28, Delmarva Shorebirds mascot Sherman visited classrooms at Southern Delaware School of the Arts to promote the team’s “Hit the Books” program in which students can earn free game tickets by reading four books by the end of February.

Georgetown Elementary School hosted “Donuts with Grown-Ups” on Thursday, January 22. About 400 family members visited the school in the morning to have
donuts and read with their children.

Miss Delaware Hailey Mack (an IRSD graduate) visited Sussex Central Middle School on January 21 to lead an engineering challenge with STEM and Project Lead The Way students.

Georgetown Middle School was once again selected to continue a pilot program through Carnegie Learning and Carnegie Mellon University on the use of Augmented Reality Glasses to support learners on the Mathia platform. The glasses allow teachers to see in real-time students who need support when using the Mathia platform. For two days in December, Georgetown Middle School teachers used the glasses to support learners during classroom instruction.

The Sussex Central High School choir performs "Ich glaube an die Sonne" during a visit and lecture by Warren Rosenfeld on December 17. Soloists were Vittoria Hopper, Zoe Cullen and Mia Smith.

The Howard T. Ennis School hosted the Delaware Special Olympics bocce competition on October 22 at the Sussex Central High School/Sussex Central Middle School complex.
