Adult Education Announces Winter/Spring Courses

The Indian River School District’s Adult Education course offerings for Winter/Spring 2020 can now be viewed online at community.irsd.net.

Winter/Spring 2020 courses are as follows:

Youth Programs - Pre-registration required

Boys Lacrosse Grades 5-8: Thursdays from Jan. 23 through Feb. 27, 6:00-7:30 p.m., $35, John M. Clayton Elementary School. This clinic is for first-time players to learn the game, as well as for experienced players who want to improve their skills. Players will participate in individual drills, small group activities and non-contact games. Players will be divided into four teams for league play.

Boys Lacrosse Grades 9-12: Wednesdays from Jan. 15 through Feb. 19, $40, John M. Clayton Elementary School. Session 1 – 5:00-6:30 p.m. for 9th and 10th Graders. Session 2 – 6:30-8:00 p.m. for 11th and 12th Graders and previous varsity players. Players are divided into three teams for league play with five field players and a goalie per team. We will use a soft lacrosse ball and small goals (4x4). No body contact and no long poles permitted.

Beginner Volleyball Academy Grades 4-6: Tuesdays from Feb.4 through March 10, 5:00-6:15 p.m., $45, G.W. Carver Center. This class will teach students foundational volleyball skills as well as further develop techniques taught in previous beginner classes. Students will learn through the use of drills and fun games that focus on cooperation.

Intermediate Volleyball Academy Grades 5-8: Tuesdays from Feb. 4 through March 10, 6:15-7:30 p.m., $45, G.W. Carver Center. This class will build upon the volleyball fundamentals covered in the beginner's academy and focus on refining advanced volleyball techniques and teaching game strategies. Students should have mastered beginner skills before enrolling in this session.

Safe Sitter Class: Wednesday and Thursday, Feb. 5-6 or March 4-5, 5:00-7:30 p.m., $45, G.W. Carver Center.

Provides students in Grades 5-8 with basic skills training and information that is necessary in caring for infants and children, such as emergency action steps, personal safety, fire safety, infant care, basic first aid and choking management.

The Factory Basketball Clinic for Grades 2-8: Thursdays from Feb. 6 through March 5, $68, Millsboro Middle School. This clinic is for students to learn basketball fundamentals through expert instruction and competitive drills in an encouraging team environment. Field Hockey Indoor League for Grades 5-12: Mondays from Jan. 6 through Feb. 24, $60, John M. Clayton Elementary School. Players will be split into teams based on age and skill level for instructional league play. Grades 9-12 play from 4:00-5:15 p.m. and Grades 5-8 from 5:30-7:00 p.m.

River Soccer Recreational League for ages 6-14: Saturdays from Jan. 4 through Feb. 15, $80, John M. Clayton Elementary School. Players will be assigned to age-appropriate teams for instructional league play.

Driver Education: Monday through Thursday, Feb. 3-13, 5:30-8:30 p.m., $545, G.W. Carver Center. This certified program provides classroom instruction and driving/observation time, which is scheduled separately. Participants must be at least 15 ½ years old by the end of the class and be academically eligible to enroll. Please see registration form for additional criteria.

Adult Fitness Programs – Register on first night of class (exact cash or checks only)

Aerobics-Step/Combo: Mondays and Wednesdays from Feb. 3 through March 30, 5:00-6:00 p.m., $64, East Millsboro Elementary School. This low impact, fat burning workout combines step, dance and weights. Bring a mat and weights.

Aerobics –Low Impact: Tuesdays and Thursdays from Feb. 4 through March 31, 4:00-5:00 p.m., $60, Lord Baltimore Elementary School. This class is a heart-pumping aerobics class with floor exercises that will shape all essential areas and help you get the results you want. Bring a mat and weights.

Fishing 101: Tuesdays from Jan. 7 through Feb. 11, 6:00-8:00 p.m., $10, Long Neck Elementary School. Come out for this fun and interactive dry land class to learn the basics of freshwater and saltwater fishing, including tying knots, rigs, techniques, maintenance and more. Guest speakers and demonstrations scheduled throughout the session.

Full Body Blast: Tuesdays from Jan. 7 through May 26, 5:15-6:15 p.m., $72, Lord Baltimore Elementary School. Are you ready to sculpt and shape your entire body? This class will integrate high intensity and lower intensity intervals maximizing the entire gym. Bring a pair of dumbbells and an exercise mat. Work at your own pace but be ready to be challenged.

Slimnastics: Mondays and Wednesdays from Jan. 13 through April 8, 7:00-8:00 p.m., $96, Long Neck Elementary School. This course will focus on toning the body through exercise with physical and cardiovascular benefits. Bring an exercise mat and light weights.

Recreational Volleyball: Wednesdays from Jan. 8 through May 20, 7:00-9:00 p.m., $76, Millsboro Middle School. Co-Ed, adult recreational volleyball league for all experience levels. Great exercise and loads of fun.

Pre-registration required

Pickleball: Tuesdays from Jan. 14 through March 10 ($45) and March 24 through May 26 ($35), 6:00-8:30 p.m., John M. Clayton Elementary School. Co-Ed, adult ladder league for all experience levels. Please bring your own paddle and prepare to get hooked on this growing sport.

Mentor Orientation (free): Choose one date for the required training class. Jan. 15, March 17 or May 7 from 9:00 a.m-12:00 p.m. or Feb. 6 or April 9 from 12:00-3:00 p.m., Indian River Educational Complex. Make a difference in the life of a child by becoming a mentor. Mentors spend one hour per week meeting with their mentee at school. Register at http://connecting-generations.org.
