In accordance with Governor Carney’s decision, and in order to prevent the spread of the Coronavirus, the Indian River School District will now be closed through Friday, May 15. 

This closure includes all athletic events.

The district will continue to keep families informed through various communication tools, including our district website

We ask that employees check district email for communications regarding work schedules during this time period.

We would like to offer a sincere thanks to our Indian River staff and community for its ongoing support and patience during this challenging time.

The district has implemented a COVID-19 preparedness plan, which can be accessed by clicking on the link below. Our instructional team has been proactive in establishing plans on how instruction could occur once we reached a Level 4 designation. To access these plans, CLICK HERE. 


The district has been proactive this winter in providing parents with information on how to handle situations in which their children exhibit flu-like symptoms. Parents can take the following steps to help prevent the spread of this and other respiratory illnesses:

  • Wash hands often
  • Avoid touching eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands
  • Cover mouth/nose with a tissue or sleeve when coughing or sneezing
  • Keep your child home if he or she is sick
  • Stay home and avoid others if you are sick
  • Avoid contact with sick people

 In addition, the Delaware Division of Public Health has opened a call center to take questions from the public, schools, medical providers, state agencies and community organizations. Hours of operation will be 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Other Important IRSD Announcements

  • The district is implementing a Remote Learning Plan for students beginning on April 20. CLICK HERE for details.
  • The Thrifty Eagle Store at the G.W. Carver Center in Frankford will be closed until further notice.
  • The IRSD Community Food Pantry at the G.W. Carver Center will be closed until further notice.
  • All IRSD Adult & Community Education classes are canceled until further notice. Make-up classes will be scheduled at a later date.
  • Instructional contingency plans for students to complete work at home during the school closure are available on the district website at To access these materials, click on the News tab at the top of the page and go to the item titled “More Instructional Resources Available.” These resources are self-paced and can be accessed at any time. Participation is considered voluntary and this will not count as graded work. Students should use these resources through April 19. 
  • The district is providing meals to students while school is closed. CLICK HERE for details.
  • DART is offering students free bus rides on regularly-scheduled bus routes to access meal programs on weekdays from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. until school is back in session.
  • The Indian River School District is cancelling all student field trips through May 15. In addition, the district will not permit the use of its school facilities by community groups during this same time period.

  • The Indian River School District will begin offering "Drive Up Wifi" service at Sussex Central High School and Indian River High School starting on April 2 as an option for staff and students to access the internet free of charge during the COVID-19 pandemic.
