District Announces School Reopening Plans
District Announces School Reopening Plans
Posted on 08/28/2020
Indian River School District families will have the option of participating in hybrid or full remote instructional models for the first marking period of the 2020-2021 school year, which begins on September 17.

The hybrid model will be a combination of in-person and virtual instruction. The remote model, titled the IRSD Remote Academy, will consist of all virtual instruction. Parents can choose which model they would like to utilize for their children during the first marking period.

The district has created a special Reopening Plan that provides information about instructional schedules, transportation, nutrition services, safety protocols and other important topics. Click below to view the Reopening Plan.

Under the hybrid model, elementary and middle school students will be divided into two cohorts and attend school two days per week. Students in Cohort A will attend school in person on Monday and Tuesday and participate in remote learning Wednesday through Friday. Students in Cohort B will learn remotely Monday through Wednesday and attend school in person on Thursday and Friday. All district students will receive remote instruction on Wednesday to allow for the extensive cleaning of school buildings.

Schools will assign students to cohorts and communicate detailed information to parents in the coming weeks.

The hybrid model will be phased in throughout the first marking period. The schedule for elementary and middle school in-person instruction is as follows:

Dates In-Person Instruction
September 17 – October 2 Grades PreK-1 (Cohorts A and B)
October 5-16 Grades PreK-3 (Cohorts A and B)
October 19-23 Grades PreK-6 (Cohorts A and B)
October 26 – November 6 Grades PreK-8 (Cohorts A and B)

At the high school level, ninth-grade students will receive in-person instruction during the first marking period. They will be divided into four cohorts and attend school one day per week beginning November 9.

9th Grade In-Person Instruction
Cohort A – Monday
Cohort B – Tuesday
Cohort C – Thursday
Cohort D – Friday

Students in Grades 10-12 will receive remote instruction for the entire first marking period, which concludes on November 18.

A gradual phase-in of hybrid in-person instruction is necessary due to the complexities of six-foot social distancing, which will severely limit capacity in classrooms and on school buses. Additionally, schools must adhere to enhanced cleaning protocols and one-way traffic flow patterns in hallways and during arrival/dismissal. Our goal is to provide high-quality instruction for all students beginning on September 17 while we simultaneously work to strategically employ and integrate all safety protocols to ensure the health and well-being of students and staff.

Students in ALL grades will attend school remotely on days when they are not receiving in-person instruction at their schools.

Instructional plans beyond the first marking period will be considered by the administration and Board of Education this fall.

The Indian River School District sincerely appreciates your patience and understanding as we navigate this unprecedented crisis.
