About IRSD

The Indian River School District, located in Southeastern Sussex County, is one of the largest school districts in the State of Delaware. Formed in 1969 by the consolidation of several smaller districts, the Indian River School District serves the towns of Selbyville, Frankford, Dagsboro, Fenwick Island, Bethany Beach, Ocean View, Millville, Clarksville, Gumboro, Millsboro and Georgetown.

Based on enrollment, Indian River is the fifth largest of the state's 19 school districts. Geographically, it is the largest non-technical school district in Delaware, covering more than 360 square miles. A 10-member elected Board of Education serves as the main governing body.

Our Schools & Teachers

The district consists of seven elementary schools, three middle schools, two high schools, two special schools, an arts magnet school and an outdoor education center. Its schools serve 8,700 students and its workforce is among the largest in the state. The district has more than 600 teachers and 100 paraprofessionals.

Award Winning

The Indian River School District has six National Blue Ribbon Schools and five National Distinguished Title I Schools. Its students annually rank among the state’s best on scores from the Delaware Student Testing Program.

These accomplishments, along with 12 state Superstars in Education awards and multiple Superior-rated schools, make Indian River one of the finest public school districts in the State of Delaware.
